Your health directly affects the children in your life and entire family. If not in the foods that you feed your family and daily activities (or lack of physical activity), than in other areas like work, stress, physical and psychological health. Everything we do directly influences the people around us; loved ones are on the front lines indeed. Diet, fitness, work and emotions included.
Obesity Epidemic
Obesity is at an all time high in the United States; especially for children. How did we become such an obese nation so fast? Well, the human body is designed to store energy for times of famine. On the other hand, Americans have never been so fat / obese as they have grown to be over the past 30 years. This is why you will hear and read this explained as the obesity epidemic. We usually think infectious disease when we hear the word "epidemic", though it does apply in this case because an epidemic does not have to be contagious; just wide spread and affecting a large percentage of a population. People are more obese than they were 30 years ago.OK, so we are fatter people ... what is the big deal?
In addition to not looking and having optimal fitness levels, those who are overweight / obese are at risk for The Metabolic Syndrome: Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, Polysystic Ovarian Syndrome, Lipid Problems, Cancer, Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), Fatty Liver Disease and Dementia. This equates to 60% of our population. 75% of health care costs world wide. 2011 United Nation Secretary General announced that non communicable diseases like these pose a bigger threat to the developing word than acute diseases (including HIV / AIDS).
This is the HUGE deal steaming from our HUGE nation that is directly affecting the world. It is hard to imagine our future with staggering information like this!
